South Eastern Michigan Indians, Inc. is a non-profit Urban Indian Center providing services for Native Americans in Michigan and directed by Euphemia Sue Franklin, a member of the Sault St. Marie tribe of Chippewa Indians, who will speak about Indigenous peacemaking practices. She will explain the Indigenous peacemaking process that uses traditional values and ceremonial practices, so people can talk together and determine steps to heal relationships harmed by conflict. This method has been adapted into today’s court system and called restorative justice, which strives for community restoration rather than punishment. Sue is an engaging speaker who passionately shares her Native American heritage as she educates us about tribal customs and traditions that lead to peace. Come and hear her at the Mission Moment on October 6th in the parlor after worship. |

What makes a Baptist a Baptist? The ultimate answer, of course, is simple: Membership, or regular attendance at a local Baptist Church. But there are all kinds of Baptist groups and Baptist churches! So, what are the “generic distinctions,” the “peculiar convictions,” the “specific ideals” that Baptists rally around and that make a Baptist a Baptist? What is the shape and feel of the 21st century Baptist movement? On October 8th, our Discipleship Class dinner and gathering will focus on Baptists in America beginning in the 18th century through the mid 19th century. In November, we will explore the Baptist movement from mid 19th century to the present and the challenges brought about by change and conflict. The goal of these sessions will be to allow those who attend to discover more about their Baptist tradition and how to better understand and practice their faith. |
