October Mission Offering | International Ministries Project | Bibles for Congo Literacy Teachers
Imagine being a teacher without a text book or a new reader with nothing to read. That’s the gap this project is trying to fill. In the Congo volunteer literacy teachers help others learn to read. Yet, both the teachers and their students lack reading materials in their own language. A Bible can be used as a teaching tool that inspires reading, deepens faith, and brings literacy to communities. The goal of this project is to give Bibles as teaching materials to volunteer Congolese literacy teachers.
There are few reading materials available in local languages and Congo doesn’t have a tradition of buying books of any kind. The gift of a Bible is a public recognition of each teacher’s contribution in teaching adults and children to become literate. It has a wealth of stories, proverbs, and poetry that captures students’ interest in reading and helps students apply them to their lives. A Bible costs $10 and 150 teachers are waiting for Bibles.
Your gift offers hope that a literate student will gain confidence in managing life’s urgent demands, and the experience of a spiritual change. A gift of $100 will buy 8 Bibles and a $500 gift will buy 41 Bibles. You are invited to learn more about this project at the Mission Moment after worship on October 4th.
