Mission Moment
March 2 @ 11:30 am - 12:00 pm

The Michigan Prison Doula Initiative is a nonprofit organization that offers non-medical pregnancy, birth, and postpartum support to individuals affected by imprisonment. Their mission is to provide comprehensive childbirth education and professional doula services to women in Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility, which fosters self- determination and strong family relationships.
A doula is a non-medical professional who gives emotional and physical support before, during, and after childbirth. They function as a liaison between the mother and care providers at the hospital, offering emotional reassurance, decision-making assistance, and physical support. After birth, mothers will only have 1-2 days with their baby before returning to prison. The doula helps the mother bond with her baby so she can achieve the most satisfying experience possible.
MPDI’s vision is to include opportunities for extra time and further bonding between mothers and their families, re-entry resources, and mentorship opportunities. Jacqueline Williams, program founder, says, “The way we take care of people at their lowest point directly impacts how they return to the community and maintain the family bond … because babies born to incarcerated mothers are far more likely to end up being incarcerated themselves.”
This unique program can benefit from your Mission Offering to train doulas to serve incarcerated women in need of care. Come to the Mission Moment on Sunday, March 2nd after worship to hear more about this unique program.
