• Mission Moment

The Parlor 300 Willits St, Birmingham, MI, United States

One Great Hour of Sharing supports ministries to displaced persons and development projects of the American Baptist Churches and its partners, that provide emergency relief and funds for projects addressing chronic needs. The Outreach team has chosen to support the Stitching Change project for the OGHS Offering because it expands its outreach to women refugees in the local community. The nonprofit, Stitching Change, provides training in sewing and business skills to refugee women so they can set up a small business and become a sustaining community. Sewing classes are offered at First Baptist Church of Kansas City where volunteers teach students to sew reusable tote bags, pouches, gift bags, phone cases and woolen hats, which they sell for supplemental income. Through ESL classes, the women also learn a new language as preparation for citizenship. As they take the classes together, they enjoy fellowship across ethnic, language, cultural, and religious lines.
