You, your family, and your friends are cordially invited to the 2025 annual Sanctuary Homecoming Potluck! Festivities begin immediately after the worship service on Sunday, September 7th and will take place in Fellowship Hall. We’ll share an excellent meal, get to know each other better, and even play a few games. Dress is casual. The church will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, and all the fixings, along with drinks and table settings. If you would like to bring a dish to pass, please do! |

We will gather on Monday nights at 7 PM for a class again this Fall. Our first session will be on September 8th. The group will look over potential topics and formats for the next few months and decide on a direction together. This will be a vibrant gathering if past performance is any indication! |

Our first Discipleship class will be on Tuesday, September 9th. Dinner will be at 6:30 PM with a program to follow. We will take our summer series on the church covenant and put it into practice! Each element of the covenant will be evaluated. How are we doing at fulfilling this intention? How can we build on the knowledge, skills and practices that we currently have? How should we shape our next Discipleship classes to meet those needs? |

Founded by Shamayim Harris, known as MaMa Shu, in 2016, Avalon Village was her vision for transforming Avalon St. in Highland Park from vacant and abandoned lots into a valuable urban resource. Now Avalon Village includes 45 parcels of land – 95% of Avalon Street. The village that she envisioned has become a prototype for distressed and neglected communities, for which she was recognized as one of USA Today’s 2024 Women of the Year. She likes to say she is changing “blight to beauty.” One of the Village programs is the Homework House, a tutoring center, and safe place for community children to come before and after school to eat, get help with homework, and learn life skills. It helps foster a love for learning, creating, and community service. After taking 6 years to complete, it even includes a place to shower or do laundry. Avalon Village strives to be an example of sustainable living in urban communities that will teach and inspire the children to continue to build up their neighborhoods. Your donation will help fund programming for Homework House and transform Avalon Street, one block at a time. The founder and director, MaMa Shu, will be here on September 14th after worship to tell us about this tutoring center where children get help with homework and learn life skills. |

On Monday afternoons, we will gather on Zoom for a book study of Aging Faithfully, a holy invitation to grow written by Alice Fryling. In Aging Faithfully, spiritual director Alice Fryling guides our walk with God through the uncharted terrain of our later years when we may become preoccupied with all we are losing. As we listen for God’s voice in this vulnerable time, Alice shows how God invites us to renewal from within. We can learn to accept our responses to the aging process and grow in our relationship to ourselves and to God, experiencing grace and love in deeper and deeper ways. Alice speaks to the questions many older people ask: • Will aging change who I am? • Will aging diminish who I am as a person? • How will aging change my relationships with family and friends? • How will aging affect my relationship with God? • What do I do about the things that I do not like about the aging process? • Is there anything I like about getting older? • How can I continue to grow in this new season of life? The book includes personal meditations as well as group discussion questions to help us navigate the process of aging faithfully.
