DESCRIPTION:The Outreach team has chosen to partner with the afterschool program\, Bound Together\, again this year because of their outstanding work with elementary students to foster personal and academic excellence. They continue to serve the Pontiac community since starting at All Saints Episcopal Church in 1994. Joining with other community sponsors\, children receive free tutoring\, enrichment activities\, and a hot meal. Trained volunteers engage students in writing\, reading and math curriculum. Every phase of the program supports their mission to serve the whole child in a caring community\, nurturing self-worth\, and academic growth. Michele Wogaman\, Program Director\, will be joining us on November 6th to share more about the work being done at Bound Together.

They began a new ministry serving at Deborah’s House in 2016\, ministering to Haitian\, Central American\, and African migrants. Their mission is to strengthen the local leadership of women\, who now operate the shelter for women and children’s victims of family violence. \nWe are thrilled to have them join us on October 16th immediately following worship to share their work in Mexico. DESCRIPTION:The Outreach Team has designated the September mission offering to benefit American Baptist Home Mission Societies\, which receive funding from the American Baptist One Great Hour of Sharing offering. OGHS is an ecumenical effort of nine Christian denominations working in cooperation with Church World Service\, to assist communities in times of crisis and provide immediate relief and long-term recovery after disasters. AHMS support crisis relief ministries across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. \nOn September 25\, the Living Faith Team will welcome Lynne Punnett\, ABC Region Consultant for short-term missions\, to speak to us about organizing mission teams in Haiti\, which she has coordinated each year since 2011. She will also update us about ministries to Puerto Rico and the recent flooding crisis in Kentucky.

Alongside Zaman’s Good Deeds Resale Shop\, Client-Choice Food Pantry and Literacy and Sewing Centers\, the bakery is central to efforts to provide holistic client-centric services including everything from food and clothes to entrepreneurship training and onsite employment opportunities. \nGary Waxler\, the bakery director\, will be at Sanctuary after worship on Sunday\, August 7 to give an overview of Zaman and bring their delicious cookies for our treats.

Monthly peer-to-peer support group meetings help families in crisis to dispel myths and stereotypes about sexual orientation and gender identity by encouraging dialogue in a confidential\, non-judgmental environment. PFLAG advocates for equality for everyone through school bullying programs\, outreach to communities of faith\, and education about workplace non-discrimination. DESCRIPTION:NEXT\, the name of the Birmingham Senior Center\, has served the residents of Birmingham\, Bingham Farms\, Beverly Hills\, Franklin\, and surrounding areas since 1978. Their motto describes their mission: “Your place to stay active and connected.” They help seniors put the pieces together to find opportunities to enroll in a fitness\, art or computer class or attend a speaker series. They can receive Meals on Wheels\, get transportation on a Smart bus\, a free consultation with an attorney or referrals to other services. Income qualified seniors can receive volunteer help or financial aid for yard services or home repairs. Your support will keep NEXT growing and thriving since they receive little municipal support and rely on donations from those who value the contributions of older adults. DESCRIPTION:A three session online book review of “The Gift of Years” by Joan Chittister who describes how you can grow older gracefully by embracing the blessings and overcoming the burdens of aging. She helps us realize how aging is a precious gift of becoming more fully alive in a new stage of life. Each one-hour session will cover three aspects of aging written in easy to read and inspiring short chapters. The group will share their reflections hereon selected topics using leader assigned questions. There is no age limit for participants. We can all benefit from a new perspective on this stage of life. This book study will be led by Janice Rowe\, a retired licensed professional counselor and co-facilitator of Sanctuary’s Grief Support Group. DESCRIPTION:The Area Agency on Aging 1-B is a non-profit organization supporting older adults and their families in six counties including Oakland. They offer a critical link for older adults to have the care they need to age safely and with the dignity they deserve. Seniors can receive help at any place they call home: their own home or apartment\, an assisted living facility or with family caregivers. A wide range of services include information and assistance\, in-home care\, Meals on Wheels\, Community Dining\, transportation\, senior center contacts\, long term care Ombudsman and assistance for LGBTQ seniors. Gifts from Sanctuary will be used wherever it is needed most\, including funds for meals on wheels to seniors when they are alone on holidays. With the Outreach quarterly focus on seniors\, we encourage your support of this agency.
