DESCRIPTION:Founded by Shamayim Harris\, known as MaMa Shu\, in 2016\, Avalon Village was her vision for transforming Avalon St. in Highland Park from vacant and abandoned lots into a valuable urban resource. Now Avalon Village includes 45 parcels of land – 95% of Avalon Street. The village that she envisioned has become a prototype for distressed and neglected communities\, for which she was recognized as one of USA Today’s 2024 Women of the Year. She likes to say she is changing “blight to beauty.” \nOne of the Village programs is the Homework House\, a tutoring center\, and safe place for community children to come before and after school to eat\, get help with homework\, and learn life skills. It helps foster a love for learning\, creating\, and community service. After taking 6 years to complete\, it even includes a place to shower or do laundry. \nAvalon Village strives to be an example of sustainable living in urban communities that will teach and inspire the children to continue to build up their neighborhoods. Your donation will help fund programming for Homework House and transform Avalon Street\, one block at a time. \nThe founder and director\, MaMa Shu\, will be here on September 14th after worship to tell us about this tutoring center where children get help with homework and learn life skills.

As we listen for God’s voice in this vulnerable time\, Alice shows how God invites us to renewal from within. We can learn to accept our responses to the aging process and grow in our relationship to ourselves and to God\, experiencing grace and love in deeper and deeper ways. \nAlice speaks to the questions many older people ask: \n• Will aging change who I am?\n• Will aging diminish who I am as a person?\n• How will aging change my relationships with family and friends?\n• How will aging affect my relationship with God?\n• What do I do about the things that I do not like about the aging process?\n• Is there anything I like about getting older?\n• How can I continue to grow in this new season of life? \n​The book includes personal meditations as well as group discussion questions to help us navigate the process of aging faithfully.

DESCRIPTION:On Monday afternoons\, we will gather on Zoom for a book study of Aging Faithfully\, a holy invitation to grow written by Alice Fryling. In Aging Faithfully\, spiritual director Alice Fryling guides our walk with God through the uncharted terrain of our later years when we may become preoccupied with all we are losing. As we listen for God’s voice in this vulnerable time\, Alice shows how God invites us to renewal from within. We can learn to accept our responses to the aging process and grow in our relationship to ourselves and to God\, experiencing grace and love in deeper and deeper ways. \nAlice speaks to the questions many older people ask: \n• Will aging change who I am?\n• Will aging diminish who I am as a person?\n• How will aging change my relationships with family and friends?\n• How will aging affect my relationship with God?\n• What do I do about the things that I do not like about the aging process?\n• Is there anything I like about getting older?\n• How can I continue to grow in this new season of life? \n​The book includes personal meditations as well as group discussion questions to help us navigate the process of aging faithfully.

DESCRIPTION:Each year thousands of churches and individuals come together to promote and support ministries that God is using to transform the world in over 70 countries. Donations are used for mission program support for global servants\, international partners\, and other ministries\, and for administrative and development costs. \nThe Outreach team has designated the WMO offering for the IM Missionary Kids Care project. Missionary kids grow up in a life of many transitions and good-byes. These challenges have resulted in eight in ten MKs\, aged 18-26\, having severe depression or anxiety and one in five leaving their faith entirely. This project helps them find their place in God’s kingdom and prepares their families for living and ministering overseas and assisting them in transition and re-entry after home assignments. \nMKCares takes on a caregiving role to address missionary kids’ emotional\, spiritual\, and physical health by providing avenues of communication\, educational assistance\, resources and understanding. It encourages parents to assist them in becoming healthy individuals and families. You’re’ invited to come to the parlor after worship on October 5th to learn more about this project.
