Mission Moment

The Parlor 300 Willits St, Birmingham, MI, United States

It is alarming to learn that one in four people sitting in our pews has a family member struggling with mental health, and that a majority of those go first to a spiritual leader for help. Pathways to promise provides that resource by lifting up the vital role of faith in the treatment and recovery of mental illness. American Baptist Home Mission Societies supports this interfaith cooperative that facilitates the faith community’s work in reaching out to those with mental health challenges, disabilities, addictions, and their families. They focus on the important role of faith and spirituality in treating mental illness and helping family members to find strength and hope in caring for a loved one with a mental illness. One of their programs is Mental Health Ministries, a web-based interfaith outreach that offers downloadable print and media resources adaptable to the unique needs of each congregation. These help churches learn how to create an atmosphere of faith for people with mental illnesses, allowing them to actively share their gifts and interests in their communities. The Mission Moment on May 7 will feature a video interview with Curtis-Ramsey Lucas, ABHMS staff member, board member of Pathways to Promise, and editor of the Christian Citizen magazine. He encourages pastors to speak out about mental illness with directness and compassion and addresses the disconnect between mental health need and appropriate care. Your donations to this vital program will help sustain the Pathways to Promise ministry and support its ability to provide resources that help erase mental illness stigma in our faith communities.
