DESCRIPTION:Founded by Michele Austin in 2013\, the Oakland County Foster Closet supports foster families in Oakland\, Macomb\, and Wayne Counties. It provides services to at-risk\, adopted\, foster\, and qualified low-income children\, supported by community financial resources\, in-kind donations\, fundraisers\, and grants. \nMichelle knew firsthand that foster children often enter the system with nothing but the clothes on their backs\, so she collected clothing\, shoes\, bedding and diapers\, and operated the closet out of her home. As OCFC grew in popularity among families in need\, the nonprofit moved into a 4\,000-square-foot building in Farmington Hills. \nTheir services help reduce financial strain for foster families by freeing up funds that would otherwise be used to fulfill immediate needs like clothing and diapers\, which are not always paid for by state agencies. This enables foster families to use their funds to help children adapt to their homes. \nMichelle acts as the OCFC director and is passionate about their mission that every child has a loving environment where they can grow and thrive. Michelle will share her story of faith at the Mission Moment on Sunday\, August 3 after worship in Fellowship Hall. Please be aware that they accept donations of clothing and equipment for preemies through teenage children\, and volunteers are always welcome to help organize them for family shopping.

DESCRIPTION:Founded by Shamayim Harris\, known as MaMa Shu\, in 2016\, Avalon Village was her vision for transforming Avalon St. in Highland Park from vacant and abandoned lots into a valuable urban resource. Now Avalon Village includes 45 parcels of land – 95% of Avalon Street. The village that she envisioned has become a prototype for distressed and neglected communities\, for which she was recognized as one of USA Today’s 2024 Women of the Year. She likes to say she is changing “blight to beauty.” \nOne of the Village programs is the Homework House\, a tutoring center\, and safe place for community children to come before and after school to eat\, get help with homework\, and learn life skills. It helps foster a love for learning\, creating\, and community service. After taking 6 years to complete\, it even includes a place to shower or do laundry. \nAvalon Village strives to be an example of sustainable living in urban communities that will teach and inspire the children to continue to build up their neighborhoods. Your donation will help fund programming for Homework House and transform Avalon Street\, one block at a time. \nThe founder and director\, MaMa Shu\, will be here on September 14th after worship to tell us about this tutoring center where children get help with homework and learn life skills.

DESCRIPTION:On Monday afternoons\, we will gather on Zoom for a book study of Aging Faithfully\, a holy invitation to grow written by Alice Fryling. In Aging Faithfully\, spiritual director Alice Fryling guides our walk with God through the uncharted terrain of our later years when we may become preoccupied with all we are losing. As we listen for God’s voice in this vulnerable time\, Alice shows how God invites us to renewal from within. We can learn to accept our responses to the aging process and grow in our relationship to ourselves and to God\, experiencing grace and love in deeper and deeper ways. \nAlice speaks to the questions many older people ask: \n• Will aging change who I am?\n• Will aging diminish who I am as a person?\n• How will aging change my relationships with family and friends?\n• How will aging affect my relationship with God?\n• What do I do about the things that I do not like about the aging process?\n• Is there anything I like about getting older?\n• How can I continue to grow in this new season of life? \n​The book includes personal meditations as well as group discussion questions to help us navigate the process of aging faithfully.

DESCRIPTION:On Monday afternoons\, we will gather on Zoom for a book study of Aging Faithfully\, a holy invitation to grow written by Alice Fryling. In Aging Faithfully\, spiritual director Alice Fryling guides our walk with God through the uncharted terrain of our later years when we may become preoccupied with all we are losing. As we listen for God’s voice in this vulnerable time\, Alice shows how God invites us to renewal from within. We can learn to accept our responses to the aging process and grow in our relationship to ourselves and to God\, experiencing grace and love in deeper and deeper ways. \nAlice speaks to the questions many older people ask: \n• Will aging change who I am?\n• Will aging diminish who I am as a person?\n• How will aging change my relationships with family and friends?\n• How will aging affect my relationship with God?\n• What do I do about the things that I do not like about the aging process?\n• Is there anything I like about getting older?\n• How can I continue to grow in this new season of life? \n​The book includes personal meditations as well as group discussion questions to help us navigate the process of aging faithfully.
