DESCRIPTION:The Jay Shop in Pontiac\, provides disadvantaged and disabled persons in Oakland County with employment and work experiences to build a foundation for a future career. Since 1965\, individuals with mental or economic hardships and former prisoners have come to The Jay Shop for valuable employment opportunities. \nThe organization hires and trains community members often overlooked by employers and enables them to achieve their highest potential of employment and earned income. They believe that rehabilitation offers second chances for workers to better their lives. They also value inclusivity where all people are treated with respect and dignity in a diverse workplace. \nA Transitional Work Program helps trainees receive workplace experience while also earning an income so they can sustain and transition to competitive employment. This includes using a computer to find jobs\, assistance in improving literacy skills\, developing resumes and training in Microsoft Office programs. Local businesses collaborate with Jay Shop to hire these trained\, dependable\, and highly motivated workers. To ensure success\, ongoing\, one-on-one support is given for new hires to increase their integration into the workforce. \nThe Outreach team encourages you to support the Jay Shop’s mission to empower disadvantaged employees. It is a “hands up” service that aligns with Sanctuary’s commitment to address the needs of the marginalized groups in our community. You’re invited to learn more about them at a Mission Moment after worship on Sunday\, May 4th in the parlor.

DESCRIPTION:Chance for Life (CFL) was founded in 1992 by Tom Adams and Jessica Taylor to help inmates in Michigan prisons reintegrate into the community through mentorship and job training. CFL serves former prisoners\, their families\, low-income individuals\, and people with disabilities by providing family reintegration and referrals for legal services\, substance use prevention\, mental and medical health care\, and food and clothing. They collaborate with organizations that offer job training\, housing\, and food and utility assistance. Corporate sponsors include the Detroit Police Dept.\, Goodwill Industries\, Michigan Works\, Matrix Human Services\, Michigan Dept. of Corrections\, and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries. On June 1st\, Mr. Adams and Ms. Taylor will present their expertise on CFL’s mission and services during a Mission Moment after worship. DESCRIPTION:UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN PRISON CREATIVE ART PROJECT \nCan you imagine 18 prison art workshops taking place in 2022\, serving over 300 incarcerated prisoners\, and 714 works of art by 443 incarcerated artists being included in an Annual Exhibition? That is what the U of M Prison Creative Art Project has done. \nFounded in 1990 with a single theatre workshop\, PCAP has grown to include undergraduate courses\, exhibitions\, publications\, a prison reentry arts program\, and events that reach thousands of individuals each year. It brings those impacted by the justice system together with the University of Michigan community for artistic collaboration\, mutual learning\, and growth. \nPCAP programs include: \n\nAn Annual Art Exhibition on the U of M campus featuring prisoners’ art from every state prison in Michigan.\nCourses and workshops for undergraduate participation in prison arts workshops and training in issues of incarceration and the arts.\nA Literary review highlighting the talent and diversity of Michigan’s incarcerated artists.\nA Linkage Project connecting artists with professional development resources and a peer support network.\n\nCome to the Mission Moment after worship on July 13 to hear Mattie Leavy\, PCAP Engagement Coordinator\, give an overview of the project. This is another opportunity to support prisoner reentry positively impacting our communities.
