SUMMARY:Mission Moment
DESCRIPTION:It all started in 2022\, when Angel Flewellyn began preparing a Sunday dinner for 12 homeless people. Now she prepares meals for almost 100\, six days a week\, at the Rosa Parks Transit Center in Detroit. She calls her ministry the Sunday Best Crew so the homeless can enjoy a home-cooked nutritious meal traditionally served on Sunday. Thanks to Angel\, homeless seniors\, veterans\, young adults aged out of the foster care\, and others struggling with mental illness\, can increase their healthy eating habits and decrease the risk of serious health problems. \nMost of the people she feeds do not qualify for government food assistance because they lack proper identification\, which prevents their access to health care and services\, and leaves them more vulnerable to chronic disease and illness. The Outreach Team selected this ministry to support the increasing number of vulnerable people in Detroit lining up for their only source of food. We will be asking for donations of lunch bag suitable fresh fruit to bring to church on Sept. 24\, which we will deliver that day. You may also donate money during September towards the use of a food truck in the future. For more information go to sundaybestcrew.org or come to the Mission Moment after church on Sept.17 to watch a television broadcast about her ministry. Please see Janice or Harriet if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Mission Moment
DESCRIPTION:Forgotten Harvest performs a unique function in Metro Detroit to relieve hunger and prevent nutritious food waste. They rescue food surpluses from grocery stores\, markets\, restaurants\, and caterers\, which would otherwise go to waste\, and deliver it free-of-charge to non-profit emergency food providers. Our American Baptist Friendship House is one of them. Their mission is to put into action as they deliver 144\,000 pounds of surplus food per day to families who are food insecure and struggle to cover the cost of basic life necessities. Forgotten Harvest helps create communities that work together to end hunger and increase individual\, neighborhood\, economic\, and environmental health. \nOn August 6\, the Mission Moment will feature Forgotten Harvest Community Engagement Coordinator\, Mary Moore-Butler\, who will enlighten us about how the organization fights food insecurity and waste. She will highlight their new facility in Oak Park and 95-acre farm in Fenton that grows fresh produce. We will also learn about the organization’s many programs\, including mobile and school pantries\, summer lunch and youth snack programs\, and providing fresh food for seniors and veterans. \nAs inflation continues to impact the cost of food and other necessities\, emergency food providers are seeing an increased need across Southeast Michigan. The Outreach team asks for your support to help relieve hunger in Metro Detroit and prevent nutritious food waste through your donations to Forgotten Harvest.

SUMMARY:Mission Moment
DESCRIPTION:The Outreach Team is shifting its focus to Food Insecurity for the remainder of this year and chose five local non-profits because they create access to healthy food or deliver free food to needy families\, the homeless and seniors. Not having access to sufficient food to meet basic needs is a concern that impacts the U.S. and our state. 34 million people in the U.S. are food insecure\, 9 million of which are children. In Michigan 1 in 9 people\, and 1 in 8 children\, face hunger. These organizations supplement government assistance programs to decrease those statistics. Their services address the causes of food insecurity such as unemployment\, lack of housing\, chronic medical conditions\, disabilities and racial or ethnic disparities. Each of these non-profits are outstanding examples of how food insecurity is being addressed. The team invites you to learn more by attending the Mission Moments after worship.

SUMMARY:Mission Moment
DESCRIPTION:It is alarming to learn that one in four people sitting in our pews has a family member struggling with mental health\, and that a majority of those go first to a spiritual leader for help. Pathways to promise provides that resource by lifting up the vital role of faith in the treatment and recovery of mental illness. American Baptist Home Mission Societies supports this interfaith cooperative that facilitates the faith community’s work in reaching out to those with mental health challenges\, disabilities\, addictions\, and their families. They focus on the important role of faith and spirituality in treating mental illness and helping family members to find strength and hope in caring for a loved one with a mental illness. \nOne of their programs is Mental Health Ministries\, a web-based interfaith outreach that offers downloadable print and media resources adaptable to the unique needs of each congregation. These help churches learn how to create an atmosphere of faith for people with mental illnesses\, allowing them to actively share their gifts and interests in their communities. The Mission Moment on May 7 will feature a video interview with Curtis-Ramsey Lucas\, ABHMS staff member\, board member of Pathways to Promise\, and editor of the Christian Citizen magazine. He encourages pastors to speak out about mental illness with directness and compassion and addresses the disconnect between mental health need and appropriate care. Your donations to this vital program will help sustain the Pathways to Promise ministry and support its ability to provide resources that help erase mental illness stigma in our faith communities.

SUMMARY:Mission Moment
DESCRIPTION:In the next four months\, Monthly Mission Offerings will focus on mental wellness and the non-profits dedicated to improving the lives of the mentally ill and their families. They advocate\, educate\, support\, and raise public awareness about mental illness. And they remind us that without treatment\, the consequences for people and society are staggering\, as we have just witnessed with the mass shooting at Michigan State University. \nMental health professionals stress that treatment is available. Yet\, the stigma of weakness and poor access to services have created barriers. The need is evident when Michigan spends over three billion a year on public behavioral health care services. One in four adults have suffered from some form of mental illness. Ten percent of children and adolescents have a serious mental disorder. Major Depressive Disorder is the leading cause of disability for women and children in the world. \nIn March we will learn about NAMI (National Assoc. of Mental Illness)\, a grassroots mental health organization with affiliates in every state and over 1\,000 communities. We are fortunate to have Kevin Fischer\, Director of NAMI Michigan\, speak to us on March 5. His role is linking national resources with local chapters and coordinating family and consumer involvement to influence state policy. He will talk about Faith-Net\, an inter-faith network of NAMI and emphasize NAMI’s mission to erase the stigma of mental illness that creates a barrier to public awareness and treatment. \nOur local chapter is NAMI Metro\, serving Oakland\, Wayne\, and Macomb counties\, which provides education\, support and advocacy. Families in Action groups\, a ten-week class available on Zoom\, are an invaluable resource for parents of mentally ill children. Their website includes a Help Line and Mental Health 101 seminars. They have advocates on the federal\, state\, and local levels for equitable public and private sector policies\, and they sponsor a NAMI Walk to raise funds and awareness. \nYour contributions will help increase the mental health awareness\, support\, and advocacy available in NAMI programs.

SUMMARY:Mission Moment
DESCRIPTION:For more than 150 years\, American Baptist Home Mission Societies has answered God’s call to meet the needs of those living on the margins across the United States and Puerto Rico. Their work transforms and heals communities dealing with poverty\, disaster\, and crisis. A network of volunteers\, donors\, churches\, and Christian leaders bring hope to children and families struggling with addiction\, incarceration\, mental illness\, and societal injustice. Programs\, publications\, and resources encourage\, educate\, develop\, and strengthen Christian leaders. Their home missions include planting churches\, schools\, children’s homes\, hospitals\, and nursing homes. \nMinistries are divided into three sections: cultivating leaders\, equipping disciples\, and sponsoring healing communities. Community Outreach Ministries support a network of Christian Centers to address the specific needs of their respective communities. Onsite mission staff work in partnership with local congregations and regional ministries to provide practical assistance that helps people identify and overcome barriers preventing them from becoming all that God intended them to be. \nThe Outreach Team has chosen the ABHMS outreach ministry\, JOYA Scholars in Fullerton\, California\, for February’s Mission Offering. It prepares low-income junior high\, high school and college students to succeed through higher education. Students are primarily from Latinx and immigrant families living in Fullerton\, a marginalized community. They participate in mentoring\, tutoring\, and a Leadership Academy that gives them the resources they need to succeed in high school\, graduate from college\, build a path to a fulfilling career\, and become a community leader. Parents enroll in a Parent Academy. In these troubled times\, there is great need for transforming hope and healing which you can provide with your offering for JOYA Scholars.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity • Judson Center
DESCRIPTION:Sanctuary has had a tradition of supporting Judson Center since 1924 when they began as an orphanage. Some will remember the “Applesauce Gang” that made applesauce for the children. Through the years they have grown into five regional offices in twenty-nine counties\, offering services to families and children in foster care and adoption\, autism\, behavioral health\, and those with physical disabilities. Our support can specifically contribute to a nurturing environment for a child abuse victim\, job skill training for a young adult\, or intensive therapy for a foster care child. This is an opportunity to honor our covenant values to participate in service and share the gifts God has given us. \nThere will be a volunteer opportunity to help with Judson’s Holiday Wish program on Monday\, December 12th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. We will be organizing children’s gifts for distribution to their client families. Anyone interested can sign up in the Welcome Center or contact Janice Rowe. Volunteers will leave from the church at 1:45 pm.
